Ask the Rabbi

Hello. My question is: Can a father of the baby boy hold him by himself during the Bris. Or should it be somebody else. Thanks a lot. I'd really appreciate you answering me. Regards K.

Dear K.Thanks so much for your question! I spoke with Rabbi Sperling this morning, and he told me that Jewish law states that it is, in fact, a good custom and even preferable that the father hold the baby during the bris. You should be aware, however, that in Ashkenazic communities, the general custom is that one of the boy's grandfathers holds the boy (the word for this role is "sandak"). If your or your husband's parents is aware of this, they might feel hurt if you do not ask them to hold the baby. If this is the case, please write again, and the rabbi will advise you on what to do. mazal tov!!! Chana
